why i started a maths youtube channel

MAKE GOOD QUALITY EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS

There are several educational videos on YouTube, however, there are very few that are of good quality and post consistently good content. Furthermore, I am yet to come across any educational YouTube channel that provides free notes that match the videos. I am passionate about producing high-quality videos and learning material that encourages students to continue studying and returning to my channel: maths mentorship.

As I have a clear structure that I follow in all of my videos, subscribers know what to expect and I can be a dependable and predictable channel which is a vital aspect when it comes to teaching. Additionally, the aesthetic of my videos and channel - particularly my thumbnails - is something I have invested a lot of time into and so students know I think about the smallest details. I truly want them to get the absolute most out of all my videos. My ambition is for students up and down the country and across the world to instantly think about coming to maths mentorship on YouTube or mentorshipstudio.com when they need a good and thorough maths explanation video.

HELP STUDENTS WHO STRUGGLE WITH MATHS

Whilst I was in secondary school, I used to be a maths mentor where I would help students who struggled with maths improve their mathematical skills and confidence. In university, I also tutored students for a short period to help them improve their maths grades. Despite enjoying contributing to a handful of students’ education, I realised the impact I was having was limited. I wanted a way to reach out to more students at one time, without having to charge students for my time. The best way I knew I could do this was by creating a maths YouTube channel. By creating a channel, I can reach hundreds of thousands of students worldwide without them having to pay a penny to benefit from my help. Being able to receive and read so much positive feedback gives me the motivation to keep working hard and producing amazing content.

TO DEVELOP MY SKILLS

Through making a YouTube channel I have learnt about marketing, branding, editing, social media, public speaking, business, taxes, investment, engagement, click-through rate, monetisation, sponsorships, affiliate links, and the list continues! I have learnt an incredible amount of information and I have and will continue to harness the knowledge I have gained and the experience I am acquiring to keep producing content and resources that everyone wants and will benefit from. The amazing thing is, I started this project of creating an educational channel, thinking I would be providing a huge amount of value to the viewers, but I have gained so much value myself; I have been able to improve so many of my skills and practically utilise them.

TO CREATE A COMMUNITY

Community! Community! Community! It’s the most important thing and the best thing I have created. Having so many students across the world connecting and helping one another with maths has been so amazing to witness. The maths mentorship community is incredible when it comes to sharing the channel with others, whether that be their friends, family, or teachers. Speaking about teachers… I have had so many kind and heartfelt responses from teachers who have recommended my channel to their students and who have encouraged students to download the free notes and buy additional resources from the Studio Shop too. I adore the community and love how it is growing larger each day!

TO BUILD A BUSINESS

Maths mentorship originally started as a fun project to work on with the hopes it will impact perhaps a few dozen people. So to see the channel, grow to the size it is currently at is far beyond what I ever envisioned for the channel. It has grown to a point where I can invest more time, effort, and money into the channel and find ways to monetise it to sustain myself and pay myself for the work I put into it. I have also created additional resources which are available to buy in the Studio Shop which has enabled me to not just make some additional money but provide affordable and valuable resources to students looking for them. I have so many big ideas and plans for expansion in the future and I only hope that maths mentorship, which once started as a little side project will grow to become a large and established business and branch, under the MENTORSHIP STUDIO brand.

TO STRENGTHEN MY MATHEMATICS

Through making hundreds of maths videos and resources I have had to think carefully about the best ways to explain certain concepts, so they are understandable to my viewers and subscribers. By doing this I have been able to deepen and strengthen my understanding of mathematical topics. Hence, I think one of the best ways to revise and test our knowledge on a specific subject area is to see if we can explain it to someone who has no prior knowledge of what we’re trying to teach them.

My mathematical abilities have also widened as I have been able to construct my own maths question and then solve them. This has meant I have had to find and fix any problems in the wording of my questions and ensure I have calculated the correct solution to the more complex questions. All of this has been so much fun, and although it probably takes up the largest amount of my time, it is also the most mentally stimulating and engaging part of creating the videos and materials.

SUMMARY

Overall, my drive to create a maths YouTube channel stemmed from the fact I thought the current ones were not providing the absolute best resources for free or at a reasonable price and I felt there were so many students within the education system who felt lost and did not know where to receive sufficient support. I want to be not only better than existing channels but different. Hence why it is so crucial for me to implement my own unique elements into my videos, whether that be the structure I follow or the community I foster, or the social media presence I’m growing. Education is a lifelong journey that needs to be seen as a way to learn fun and useful information that applies to normal life and higher education. Because of this, I was adamant about using the word mentorship when describing my channel and brand as education is not just for secondary school or university, it is a continual journey and feature within our lives, and so it is fundamental to change the way people feel about learning and developing intellectually.
